This year’s Enactus Senegal National Competition, held on 7-8 July at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dakar, is a good reminder that the size of the program or the event doesn’t matter; it’s the impact you have, the effort you put in and the lives you change that are important.
Three teams participated in this year’s competition in hopes of being named the national champion. All three shared their entrepreneurial initiatives in the first round and 10 judges selected two of the teams to move forward to the final round where they presented in front of all 300 attendees. There, nine judges evaluated the presentations and chose the team from Ensup Africa as the winner. The team’s Never Die project impressed judges: the team traveled to rural Tambacounda where they trained a group of 869 women to harvest and sell Moringa Olifeira, a natural resource that lowers blood pressure and blood sugar and has recently been commercialized in parts of Senegal. By marketing and selling the product, incomes have increased and individuals in 15 villages have directly benefited.
In addition to the competition, attendees had the opportunity to take part in a career and leadership development forum, which gave students and business leaders the chance to interact directly while exploring timely and relevant topics. They also had the chance to hear from M. Al Hassan Kaba, former Director of Bank Atlantic Senegal, who spoke about the notion of leadership and shared some of his personal experiences from his career.
The competition was supported by KPMG, Ecobank, Sonatel Foundation, UPS, AXA, and Bissai Assurances, and received some impressive media coverage including articles in Soleil, the main national newspaper and several local papers.
