For the third year in a row, the Enactus team from Kabarak University took home the Golden Cup and earned the right to represent Kenya at the Enactus World Cup in South Africa this October. As one of nine teams that competed in the country’s 13th national competition, they battled through two tough rounds of competition and now have the support of their country as they prepare to take on the world. Their work developing a natural and non-toxic paint was particularly impressive to judges. After learning of the toxic components in commercial paint that are harmful to both people and the environment, the team came up with a new formula using ingredients such as cornstarch, water, neem and aloe extracts, resulting in an efficient but low odor and low allergenic product that was also less expensive. They painted 650 houses in the Gioto region, and by setting up a business around the product, created jobs and increased income by more than 200%.
On 4 July, 330 supporters came together at the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi to celebrate the year’s achievements. During the Awards Ceremony, which was sponsored by KPMG, attendees had the opportunity to hear from Maurice Gachuhi, Manager, Audit Department at KPMG, who spoke about the role of corporations in developing young leaders, and how the KPMG and Enactus global partnership achieves this goal.
Other special guests included Mishumo Madima from the South African Embassy and Florence Suji, Team Leader of Toyota Kenya Academy. In addition, KPMG hosted a career event for students where they had the opportunity to learn more about the organization and the career opportunities for Enactus students.
The event has gotten some great media coverage; check out this article in the African Executive! And catch all the highlights from the Enactus Kenya National Competition in this great flashback video!
