This year’s Enactus Brazil National Competition is a great example of the learning and collaboration that takes place during an Enactus event, with different generations of leaders gaining insight from each other about important, relevant topics. Many events have forums and panel discussions but at the Brazil national competition, which took place on 16-17 July at the Sheraton SÃO Paulo WTC, their two panels had a twist.
The first, appropriately called the ‘I Am Changing the World Student Forum’, featured three active and engaged Enactus students: Enzo Fumagalli from Enactus UFSCar, Sissa Maricaua from Enactus UniNorte, and and Matheus Cardoso from Enactus Mackenzie. The three students shared with others their personal experiences in entrepreneurship, social development and leadership. The second event was the ‘Together We are Changing the World Panel’ sponsored by Walmart, which brought together on stage representatives from partner companies Walmart, Unilever, KPMG, Nufarm, and Braskem, to discuss their views on entrepreneurship, empowerment and the sustainable development of communities in Brazil. Unlike your typical panel discussion, this one was moderated by two students, Daniel Fontana from Enactus FACAMP and Rodrigo Abdon from CEFET/RJ, creating a unique cross-generational learning experience.
Of course, the event also included the exciting national competition where 30 teams shared how they took entrepreneurial action to improve their communities over two rounds of competition. In the opening round, 81 judges narrowed the field to a final five teams who had the opportunity to present to the nearly 1,000 people in attendance in hopes of being named the national champions. At the end of the day, 80 top business leaders from Brazilian and multi-national companies evaluated the presentations and selected the team from Insper – Educational and Research Institute as the winner. Don’t miss this great video of when the team was announced – so exciting! The team will now prepare to represent their country at the Enactus World Cup in South Africa in October, and KPMG and Cargill are each generously providing three tickets for their travel to Johannesburg.
Enactus Insper’s presentation focused on their VerBem project, where they have set up an eyeglass production company staffed by people in need who would otherwise be challenged to find work, such as homeless individuals or recently released prisoners. The beauty of the initiative is that not only do these individuals gain meaningful employment and a steady income source but they are manufacturing low cost, quality prescription eyeglasses, a product that is desperately needed by those with vision impairment. To date, 7,000 people have benefited from this project with plans to grow it moving forward.
In addition to the panel discussions, attendees had the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker Pedro Melo, President and CEO of KPMG Brazil, who spoke about the ‘Ten Commandments’ for leaders, and acknowledged the value of KPMG supporting the Enactus program in Brazil. And students had the chance to learn about 10 of the generous companies that support Enactus Brazil and the various career opportunities available to them at the career fair. The event has been receiving lots of great media coverage including a feature in Pequenas Empresas & Grandes Negócios Magazine – check it out here!
