On 30 – 31 May, nearly 170 students, faculty and business leaders came together at the Monolit Plaza Hotel in Baku to celebrate the impact made by Enactus Azerbaijan over the past year. Nine teams participated in the national competition, where projects presented used entrepreneurial action to address a variety of local issues. In the opening round, 16 judges had the difficult task of selecting the final four teams. Once announced, those four teams shared their work with the entire delegation, and 15 top executives had the difficult task of selecting the national champion.

In the end, it was the team from Azerbaijan State Agricultural University that came out on top, winning not only the trophy but also the chance to represent their country at the Enactus World Cup this fall. Judges were impressed with their Old to New project: realizing the potential materials discarded every day to have a second life, the team saw an opportunity to upcycle old denim. Not only did this new initiative divert material that otherwise would have ended up in a landfill, they worked with local shoemakers to use the fabric to make shoes. The team launched a campaign to encourage community members to bring in old denim: for every three pairs of jeans contributed, they would receive one pair of shoes. Since two pairs of shoes can be made from one pair of jeans, this provided the shoemakers with material at no cost, allowing them to increase profits while reducing costs. In addition, since these types of shoes have been imported in the past, they can now be purchased at 1/5 the cost, a direct savings to consumers.

Generously supported by Youth Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerfon LLC, and AGBank OJSC, the event included a number of impressive keynote speakers including Mr. Vusal Guliyev, Head of the Sector for work with youth organizations under the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration’s Social and Political Department; and Mr. Ilgar Musabaliyev, representative of AGBank OJSC.

The event was covered by numerous media outlets including online by MediaFox and AzerTac, as well as television coverage by Region TV and MAG TV.
